The Sunday Raffle Page.
Charity Fundraising;
The Charity Bottle was set up in 1985 by Peter Horn, the landlord to raise money for St Barnabas Hospice, in memory of his wife. When he retired in 1990, I took over the management of it. Later landlords decided to widen the scope of local charities who would benefit. Each year now, a competition is held to guess the amount in the bottle and the winner nominates the charity to benefit.
Ian and Christine Jones set up the Sunday Raffle during their time as Licensees. This is held every Sunday [except the last one in each year]. Prizes include meat, wine and often chocolates and `mystery items` together with local eggs and prizes donated by people who have been on holiday to foreign parts. There is also a `wine entry` category which goes towards a twice yearly prize of a case of between 12 and 15 bottles of wine. All weekly winners are entered into a Fantasy League. The three highest entrants receive a Waitrose Voucher in January.
The Raffle is run by Peter Hornby, Steve King and Philip Manser, who take turns in spending the weekly budget for prizes.
During the year we make donations of £50 to individual `good causes` and the money left over is distributed between local village organisations [usually for those who work with children].
We rarely fail to cover our costs and usually make a profit of over £1000 in each year.
For the last two years, Carol Kimpton has organised a Boxing Day raffle which has added to the overall sum raised. People here are very generous in their support.
